History
of the Club
The story of Tarbert Loch Fyne Yacht Club began on the 18th
December 1936 when a group of sailing enthusiasts met in
Leitch's sail loft to discuss the desirability or advisability
of forming a club to encourage the sailing and racing of
small sailing craft in the vicinity of Tarbert. After much
discussion 21 names were enrolled as members.
Life
Membership..... £3.3/- each,
Ordinary Membership.... 5/- per year.
Ladies....
3/- per year
The members sailed home-made 14ft wooden dinghies of which
there were 12 - 14. Some of the names were - Tern, Ruby,
Mary, Molly, Venus, Pakeha, Mona, Ann, Jean, Rossa, Nan and
Morna. Racing was very competitive with courses of 6 miles
and the finishes inside the harbour.
By the end of the 1st
year more boats were being built with the help of Mr Thomas
Dickie (Dickies Yard) in design etc., 39 races had been run
and membership stood at 93.
The club flag incorporated blue /white being the Scottish
colours and TT from the fishing boat registration (a lot
of the members were fishermen).
In August 1939 a team from Tarbert competed at Bardowie.
Unfortunately war intervened so a return match did not happen.
Our
present club house and land were purchased in 1947 for
the handsome price of £50. A sound investment.
We thank the founder members for their foresight in starting
our club and passing on into our care the club house and
their enthusiasm for the great sport of sailing.
